Cherokees called upon fox medicine to prevent frostbite, and Hopi shamans wear fox skins in their healing ceremonies. The fox is held in esteem in societies all over the world. Foxes use their large ears to dissipate heat during the summer. Foxes are clever about being unseen, using camouflage and darkness to go unnoticed. In the winter, the fox grows a thick tuft of fur around the toe pads to keep its feet warm and give better traction.
